Science of Reading: The Learning Lab is an educator-focused series enhancing literacy understanding for effective classroom application. Each self-paced course will require 20–25 hours of instructional time and provides a scaffolded approach to learning about and teaching research-based literacy instruction.
Courses include activities, assessments, optional resources, and sessions led by Susan Lambert, Chief Academic Officer and host of Science of Reading: The Podcast. About Course 1: Foundations to the Science of Reading
In course one, you’ll dive into eight transformative modules, unlocking literacy insights and supercharging your teaching journey. Each module includes lectures hosted by Susan Lambert, examining the foundations of literacy acquisition.
You’ll learn to:
- Build foundational knowledge of literacy acquisition.
- Develop general principles and practices of structured literacy instruction.
- Understand the typical development of literacy skills and describe the reciprocal relationship among those skills.
About Course 2: Advanced Topics in the Science of Reading
In course two, you’ll dive into eight transformative modules, unlocking literacy insights and empowering you to take your Science of Reading journey to the next level.
You’ll learn to:
- Understand the purpose and when to administer screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring, and outcome assessments.
- Utilize knowledge of assessment types to analyze profiles of struggling readers.
- Distinguish characteristics of reading difficulties, including dyslexia, to identify instructional supports and accommodations.
- Explain ethical principles and responsibilities of educators to act in the best interest of all students.
